Trinidad and Tobago became a Member State of the United Nations (UN) in 1962. The UN however, has been working in the country from as early as the 1961 when the United Nations Technical Assistance Board was established. For over 50 years the United Nations has been dedicated to serving Trinidad and Tobago. In 1961, the United Nations Technical Assistance Board opened an office in Port of Spain. When Trinidad and Tobago gained independence on 31 August, 1962, the UN offices operating in Trinidad and Tobago signed Host Country Agreements which formally established the UN's role in supporting the country's development. To date, the UN family has nine (9) offices in Trinidad & Tobago and four (4) offices within the region, all faithfully serving Trinidad and Tobago (TT). The 9 UN Offices in Trinidad & Tobago are: 1. UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) 2. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 3. International Labour Organization (ILO) 4. Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) 5. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV & AIDS (UNAIDS) 6. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) 7. United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) 8. United Nations Information Centre for the Caribbean Area (UNIC) 9. United Nations Children's Fund The 4 UN Offices in the Caribbean region are: 1. International Telecommunications Union (ITU) 2. United Nations Educationa, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) 3. United Nations Women (UN Women) 4. Universal Postal Union (UPU)
