OULANGA NA NYAMBA

Since 1998, Oulanga na Nyamba NGO is actively committed to the protection of the environment (oulanga) et particularly sea turtle (nyamba). Initially created to alert the population of Mayotte about the sea turtle poaching (a threat that is still relevant in Mayotte), Oulanga na Nyamba is leading many awareness-raising actions. The sea turtle, as an emblematic species and whose presence is a sign of the good state of the marine environment, represents for the association a symbol of the preservation in the broad sense of the natural resources of Mayotte. Oulanga na Nyamba carries an important message: respect for the environment must be part of the socio-economic development of our exceptional island. The activities of the association are divided into three fundamental areas of work: AWARENESS KNOWLEDGE PROTECTION To ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of its commitment to the Mayotte environment, the association implements its actions in close relationship with citizens and multiple partners. Several times a month, the association offers its members the opportunity to observe turtles laying eggs on Moya beach (Petite Terre), one of the largest egg-laying sites on the island of Mayotte. We insist on total respect of the tranquility of the animal during this crucial stage of its life. Our volunteers take care to explain all the stages in the life of a sea turtle to raise awareness of the issues to keep these protected species. In 2023 starts the construction of the Kaz'a Nyamba, the first care and discovery center for sea turtle in Mayotte. Its objective is to preserve the sea turtle but also to promote it as a lever for educational, social, and local tourism development.
